Portland Trail Blazers’ Jusuf Nurkic fined $40,000 for throwing fan’s cellphone

Portland Trail Blazers big man Jusuf Nurkic probably won’t be confronting opposing fans any time soon. Nurkic was fined $40,000 by the NBA after video emerged showing Nurkic throwing a fan’s cell phone into the stands.

The incident occurred during the team’s 129-98 loss to the Indiana Pacers. Nurkic was injured and did not play in the game.

Following the contest, Nurkic confronted a Pacers fan, threw the fan’s phone and got in the fan’s face.

In the video, it’s unclear what prompted the exchange. The NBA did not disclose any other details regarding the confrontation, and Nurkic was not required to speak with the media following the game because he is injured.

Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported the fan allegedly said Nurkic’s mom was “trash” and called his grandmother a “b****.”

The NBA hit Nurkic hard following the incident.

The league fined Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant $25,000 for a verbal incident with a fan during Wednesday’s game against the Denver Nuggets. Durant told a fan to “shut the f*** up and sit down.” The incident was captured on video.

Nurkic likely received a larger fine after getting physical with the fan.

He did not assault the fan, but grabbing a throwing a cell phone sets a dangerous precedent.

The NBA wanted to make sure it discouraged Nurkic or any other player from engaging in that type of behavior moving forward.

Nurkic, who is out with left foot plantar fasciitis, has played 56 games this season.

He’s averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds per contest.
