The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) reported that an unattended backpack found at Siargao Airport on May 31, 2025, has been successfully returned to its rightful owner.

CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio said that at approximately 4:20 p.m., personnel from the CAAP Security and Intelligence Service and Eagle One identified a red and black backpack left unattended in the airport’s waiting area. The incident was immediately reported to the Aviation Security (AVSEC) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units.

The AVSEC and EOD teams promptly responded and conducted standard inspection procedures, including a K9 sweep. These protocols are implemented in compliance with ICAO Annex 17 and aligned with the airport’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP), ensuring global standards for threat management are upheld.

Upon confirming that the bag posed no security threat, authorities conducted an inventory of its contents, which included a laptop, power bank, cameras and other personal items.

On June 1, 2025, the backpack was successfully claimed by its rightful owner, a male Singaporean national.

CAAP commends the swift response and coordination of airport security personnel and reiterates its continued commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all airport passengers and staff. The Authority also reminds the traveling public to remain vigilant and to keep their belongings attended at all times.
