The Gray Eagle Pilots Navy Islander as AJEX DAGITPA 2022 Continues

The Commander of Western Command, Vice Admiral Alberto B Carlos PN, the Gray Eagle himself, commanded the Philippine Navy Islander (NV 314) today, 11 November 2022, making him the most senior pilot-in-command in this year’s AFP Joint Exercise DAGITPA.

A rated pilot of the Naval Air Wing, Vice Admiral Carlos took off from Antonio Bautista Air Base to simulate a joint air, sea and land operation, while conducting security patrols over the Province of Palawan.

“The Philippine Navy Islander may be the oldest aircraft participating in the exercise, and now being flown by the oldest pilot — but still strong and capable to accomplish the mission,” Vice Admiral Carlos candidly said.

The fleet of PNI aircraft have not retired despite its age but it continues to complement other aircraft of the AFP being used by WESCOM in the conduct of maritime domain awareness activities in its area of responsibility.

“The PNI aircraft remains to be a dependable asset we use for our maritime patrols and other security missions, especially in the West Philippine Sea,” said Vice Admiral Carlos. (VICTOR BALDEMOR RUIZ)
