Kinansela ng Commission on Elections (Comelec) ang nakatakda sanang special elections sa ikatlong distrito ng Negros Oriental sa Disyembre 9, 2023 upang palitan sa puwesto ang pinatalsik na mambabatas nito na si Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves, Jr.
Ito’y matapos na i-adopt ng Comelec ang rekomendasyon ng kanilang Law Department at resolusyon ng Kamara na naglalayong ipagpaliban ang special polls.
Ayon kay Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia, “This afternoon, the Comelec en banc adopted the recommendation of our law department, which is the House Resolution 136 calling for the conduct of special elections in the Third Legislative District of the province of Negros Oriental is deemed recalled and abandoned upon the passage of House Resolution 154.”
“Therefore, in recognition of the legislative power of Congress, the Law Department and the [Comelec] en banc decided to cancel the conduct of special elections in the Third Legislative District of the province of Negros Oriental and for the Commission to discontinue its ongoing preparation for the said special election,” dagdag pa ni Garcia.
Ang House Resolution 154 ay in-adopt ng Kamara nitong Nobyembre 7.
Ito’y isang araw matapos na maghain ng kanyang kandidatura para sa special polls si Pryde Henry Teves, sa pagtatangkang palitan sa puwesto ang kanyang kapatid.
Bukod kay Pryde, nagsumite na rin ng kandidatura para sa special polls sina Reynaldo Lopez at Lenin Aviola.
Matatandaang si Teves ay pinatalsik ng kanyang mga kapwa mambabatas dahil sa pagtangging umuwi sa Pilipinas at gampanan ang kanyang tungkulin, gayundin ay harapin ang mga kasong kinakaharap sa bansa, kaugnay nang pagpatay kay Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.
