Iniatas ng Department of Justice (DOJ) ang reklamo ng mga maybahay ng mga persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) sa New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) hinggil sa umano’y ‘strip search’ na isinagawa sa kanila sa kanilang pagdalaw sa kanilang mga nakapiit na mister.
Sinabi ni Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin ‘Boying’ Remulla na hindi nila kailanman kukusintihin ang mga prison guards na mapapatunayang nagkaroon ng pag-abuso sa kanilang awtoridad kaugnay nang pagsasagawa ng physical searches sa mga dalaw.
“Our Department remains fully committed to upholding the highest degree of respect for human rights in the conduct of our Corrections functions and guarantee that our agency will continue to innovate ways on how to improve our services to our PDLs and their loved ones,” ani Remulla.
“We do not condone degrading or inhuman or absurd treatment towards anyone because we want our prisons to be safe, secure and decent,” dagdag pa nito.
Ipinag-utos na rin ni Remulla ang pag-review sa mga parusang maaaring ipataw sa mga nagkasalang opisyal.
Istrikto umano silang tumatalima sa international standards kaugnay sa pagdaraos ng body searches, partikular na sa mga nilalaman ng ng Nelson Mandela Rules. Isinasaad dito na ang mga searchers ay dapat na may respeto sa dignidad at privacy ng mga indibidwal.
