Naval Station Jose Andrada, Manila – After days of rigor and physical uneasiness, the pollywogs successfully weathered the “Crossing the Line” Ceremony aboard BRP Antonio Luna (FF151) on April 30, 2023.
Passing the invisible line of the Equator at 000 Degree Latitude signals the beginning of the traditional initiation rites, which all sailors undergo aboardship.
Thirty-two new breed of shellbacks were all smiles as they finally became bonafide sons and daughters of King Neptune. A boodle fight was shared by everyone the night after the ceremony.
As one of the oldest and famous traditions of the sea, the “Crossing the Line” Ceremony features the legend of King Neptune and the members of his royal family. Its origins may also have started as a test to ensure that novice sailors can handle rough times at sea.
Representing the Philippines, Naval Task Group 80.5 aboard the Jose Rizal-class missile frigate BRP Antonio Luna (FF151), is on her way to join other nations’ navies for the maiden ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME) 2023.
A first of its kind, AIME 2023 will be conducted in Singapore and will feature harbor and at-sea events aimed at enhancing interoperability and exchange of best practices among participating navies.
