Nagpasaklolo sa Supreme Court (SC) ang Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (PISTON),para hilingin na suspindehin ang implementasyon at ipawalang bisa ang direktiba ng gobyerno may kinalaman sa Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
Hiling ni Piston Chairman Mody Floranda, kasama ang apat pang petisyuner sa SC, na mag-isyu ng temporary restraining order (TRO) o writ of preliminary injunction para mapigilan ang Department of Transportation (DOTr) at Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) sa implementasyon ng jeepney modernization at ang Disyembre 31, 2023 deadline para sa mandatory consolidation ng PUV franchise.
Sa 56-pahinang petition ay iginiit ng PISTON na unconstitutional ang nabanggit na PUVMP.
Sa ilalim ng mandatory franchise consolidation, ang isang indibiduwal na prangkisa ay papalitan ng single cooperative o korporasyon kada ruta.
Gayundin, ang tradisyunal na jeepney at ang unconsolidated utility van express (UVE) ay hindi na papayagan na makapag-operate.
Bukod sa PISTON, ang driver na si Jason Fajulagutan, commuter Ma. Flor Cerna ng KOMYUT, Bayan Muna NCR Coordinator Gaylord Despuez , Edrich Samonte ng PARA-Advocates ng Inclusive Transport, at Elmer Floro ng No to PUV Phaseout Coalition ng Panay ay kasama sa naghain ng petisyon sa SC.
Sinuportahan naman ni Atty. Diane Azores, anak ng jeepney driver at 2019 Bar topnotcher, ang petisyon.
Respondent naman sa petisyon sina Sec. Jaime Bautista of DOTr at LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz.
“The constitutionality issues raised in this Petition lie at the very root of this case, inasmuch as the dispute cannot be resolved, and resolved once and for all, unless the Honorable Court disposes of the same,” nakasaad sa petisyon.
Napag-alaman na may 68,000 driver ang mawawalan ng trabaho sa susunod na taon dahil sa PUVMP.
