KASUNOD ito ng ginawang activation ng Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) ng kanilang Shore-Based Air Defense System (SBADS) Battalion kung saan ang mga tauhan nito ay sasailalim sa mga pagsasanay kasama ang deployment at paggamit ng Brahmos supersonic missile na binili ng pamahalaan.
Pinangunahan ni Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) commandant Major General Nestor Herico ang ginanap na seremonya sa Fort Bonifacio sa Taguig City.
Ayon kay MGen. Herico, “The shore-based air defense system is considered a significant part of all reliable coastal defense systems that protect strategic assets and infrastructures. This is to address the military’s gap relative to our capacity to defend our bases and new equipment against aggressors from the air. The SBADS will complement the efforts for sea lines of communications’ control, anti-access/area-denial, and coastal and island defense operations under our archipelagic coastal defense strategy.”
Ang SBADS Battalion ay ang pangalawang unit sa ilalim ng Coastal Defense Regiment pagkatapos na ma-activate ang Shore Based Anti-Ship Missile (SBASM) Battalion.
Si Major Dennis Tubo ang outgoing Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Command, Control, Communications, Computers Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, MC6, ang magsisilbing Battalion Commander ng SBADS, kung saan tututukan niya ang pagkakaroon ng skilled personnel na hahawak sa missile system asset na nagpoprotekta sa anumang internal o external threat.
Sinabi pa ni Maj. Gen Herico na ang shore-based air defense system ay isang mahalagang bahagi sa pagkakaroon ng maaasahang coastal defense system na magbibigay proteksyon sa mga strategic asset at imprastraktura.
Naniniwala si Phil Navy Flag-Officer-in-Command (FOIC) VADM. Adelius Bordado na lubhang mahalaga na patatagin ang Phil Navy lalo pa’t ang Pilipinas ay isang archipelagic nation at very porus ang mga coastal boundaries nito.
Hindi umano matatawaran ang malaking responsabilidad ng hukbong dagat sa pag protekta nito sa maritime territory ng bansa sa pamamagitan ng pagpapatrolya ng mga barko sa karagatan.
Umaasa si Bordado na magpapatuloy ang modernisasyon ng hukbo ng upang higit pang magiging mas reliable at may credible defense posture.
