SIYAM na rebeldeng komunista ang napatay ng mga tauhan ng Armed Forces of the Philippine Visayan Command matapos na mapasabak ang mga tauhan ng Philippine Army sa tatlong sunod-sunod na engkwentro sa loob ng isang araw.
Nagresulta ito sa pagkakadakip sa isang kasapi ng communist New Peoples Army habang isang pang rebelde ang sumuko at may 17 na baril ang nabawi.
Sa ulat na ibinahagi ni Visayan Command chief LtGen Benedict M Arevalo, naganap ang unang sagupaan bandang alas- 5 ng umaga nitong Sabado nang matunton ng Philippine Army 62nd Infantry Battalion ang mga kasapi ng communist NPA weakened guerilla front Central Negros 1 (CN1) ng Komiteng Rehiyon Negros, Cebu, Bohol at Siquijor (KR NCBS)
Sa naganap na sagupaan sa Sitio Cambawagon, Barangay Trinidad sa Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental ay limang NPA terrorists ang nakitang patay habang ilang war material, food supply, medical paraphernalia at mga personal belongings kabilang ang isang M16 rifle, dalawang homemade shotguns, isang UZI machine pistol, isang KG 9 machine pistol, dalawang cal .38 pistols, apat na rifle grenades, mga magazine assemblies at iba’t- ibang live ammunitions ang nasamsam sa clearing operation.
Ilang minuto lamang ang pagitan ay nakipagbakbakan din ang mga sundalo ng 62IB sa mga teroristang grupo sa tatlong lugar sa Brgy Quintin Remo, Negros Occidental.
Ayon kay LTC ISRAEL O GALORIO (INF) PA Chief, Public Information Office, VISCOM, AFP, dito apat pang NPA ang napatay, isang ang nahuli habang nagpasyang sumuko ang isa pa. Nakuha sa encounter site ang isang M4 Firebird Rifle; dalawang M16 Rifles; isang Cal. 30; tatlong Cal. 45 Pistols; 15 assorted magazine assemblies; assorted live ammunitions; apat na Rifle Grenades; isang Improvised Explosive Device at mga several IED components.
Pinapurihan naman ni Lieutenant General Benedict M Arevalo PA, ang sigasig ng kanyang tropa sa pagtugis sa nalalabing NPA sa kanilang nasasakupan.
“I commend our troops for their unrelenting efforts in pursuing the terrorist group, as it manifests our steadfast commitment in ensuring the safety and well-being of our people in the Visayas region,” aniya.
Dagdag pa ng heneral: “No amount of deception, lies or propaganda can hide the fact that the CPP-NPA in the Visayas region continues to weaken. This latest debacle is a testament to that. Hence, our focused military operation will be sustained until justice is served, and just and lasting peace is attained.”
Dahil dito, muling nanawagan si Lt Gen Arevalo sa mga buhay pang kasapi ng CPP-NPA sa Visayas region na magbalik- loob na at mamuhay nang payapa.
“We never take joy in taking the lives of our own people. As such, we once again call upon the remnants of the CPP-NPA in the region to lay down your arms and return to the folds of the law. Heed the call of the government while you still can,” aniya.
