The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) found on September 16, 2024, through the effort of Security Screening Officer (SSO) Ronnel Bustamante, five bundles of 1,000 peso bills with an estimated value of ?500,000 during security screening at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
The owner of the bag containing the large amount of money is bound for Osaka, Japan via AirAsia Flight number Z2 188.
SSO Bustamante was conducting x-ray screening when he noticed a suspicious image on the x-ray monitor. This prompted him to call the attention of SSO Rechelle Odencio, baggage inspector, to conduct verification.
It was then that bundles of cash were discovered inside the passenger bag. OTS- SSOs immediately coordinated with the Philippine National Police, which in turn, coordinated with the Bureau of Customs (BOC). The passenger was turned over to the BOC for proper disposition.
OTS Undersecretary Crizaldo O. Nieves commends the SSOs for their diligence in thwarting attempts to exploit the transportation system for illegal activities.
“SSOs work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the security of travelers. Their dedication, attention to detail, and professionalism are crucial in preventing security threats and keeping airports secure.” Usec. Nieves said.
