Inianunsiyo ng Supreme Court (SC) ang plano nito na magdaos ng summit sa National Jail Decongestion.
Isasagawa ang National Jail Decongestion Summit sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Justice Sector Coordinating Council, na kinabibilangan ng SC, Department of Justice (DOJ) at ng Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
“Here, the SC, the DOJ, and the DILG shall collaborate to identify the root causes of prolonged detention in jails, which contribute to prison overcrowding,”ayon kay Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo.
“We aim to establish new policies and initiatives that shall expedite the processing of criminal cases and alleviate jail congestion,”dagdag pa ni Gesmundo. .
Nabatid na bibisitahin ni Gesmundo sa Linggo ang Pasay City Jail bilang paggunita sa 28th National Correctional Consciousness Week.
Kasama ni Gesmundo si Associate Justice Midas Marquez, Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez at Pasay City Vice Mayor Waldetrudes Del Rosario.
Ayon kay Gesmundo ,nais ng SC na ihayag ang mga inisyatibo na magbe -benepisyo sa PDL gaya ng pagbaba sa piyansa ng mga mahihirap na tao.
Nalaman na noong Pebrero, nag-isyu ng deparment circular ang DOJ na nag-uutos ng pagbawas sa bail bonds ng mga mahihirap na Pilipino na nahaharap sa kaso.
Ayon pay kay Gesmundo, isa pang inisyatibo ang pagpapabilis ng pagpapalaya sa mga kuwalipikadong PDLs at pag-prayoridad sa pag-disposisyon ng kasong kriminal.
“May it be freedom or justice that you await, do not lose hope, for the time will come when justice shall arrive, and freedom shall be yours,” saad pa ni Gesmundo.
Matatandaan na kamakailan ay may kabuuang 949 PDLs ang pinalaya mula sa iba’t-ibang penal farms kaya umabot na sa 6,000 ang kabuuang bilang ng mga PDLs na napalaya sa ilalim ni Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Catapang, Jr.
