THE regular maintenance repair of the NAIA’s international runway 06-24 on Sunday (July 24) had to be extended for a few hours after a pothole was found on its pavement.
It was learned from Connie Bungag, chief of the airport’s public affairs office, that the extension had to be made from the normal 1:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. to 6:20 a.m. instead, since the repair would involve cutting off a portion of the affected pavement and then asphalting.
She said that the daily maintenance also involves derubberizing and degreasing.
The extended maintenance hours affected scheduled flights using wide body aircraft. International flight operations but continued on a limited scale. As a result, there were delays or diversions of flights within the 3:30 a.m. to 6:20 a.m. window.
The domestic Runway 13-31 on the other hand, remained open.
