Mayor Honey Lacuna strongly urged those who have been fully vaccinated in the city of Manila to already take their booster shots, citing recent reports of increasing numbers in COVID-19 cases.
Lacuna said that the local government unit of Manila has never stopped administering first and second booster shots for those are eligible and who want to avail, but noted that the number of those actually getting the shots have been considerably dwindling.
According to the first lady mayor, booster shots are continuously being given in the city’s six public hospitals and in designated health centers.
Lacuna said the decrease in the number of those getting boosted may be attributed to ‘COVID fatigue’ or the belief that COVID is no longer a threat to the populace.
A doctor, Lacuna reminded Manilans that COVID is real and that it continues to claim lives, based on records being released by concerned health authorities, no less.
She also stressed the need to continue observing health protocols specially the wearing of facemasks, adding that getting boosted will provide protection for those who have been fully vaccinated, since the immunity of the initial vaccines are not forever and wanes after a certain period of time.
On Monday, she noted that the Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 10,271 new, active COVID-19 cases in the country, for a period of just one week, or from July 4 to 10, 2022.
The weekly National COVID-19 bulletin of the DOH also stated that the daily average number of new cases at least last week was at 1,467, higher by about 39 percent, compared to the cases recorded between June 27 to July 3. Of the new cases, the DOH said 27 are severe or critical.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire confirmed that most or about 60 percent of the patients admitted for COVID-19 in recent days were either unvaccinated, partially-vaccinated or have not been boosted. (Baby Cuevas)
