Recently, the Association of Philippine Volunteer Fire Brigades, Inc. held its 47th Founding Anniversary at the Century Seafood Restaurant in Malate, Manila and its 48th induction of officers, directors and members as well.

The occasion was marked by the turnover of the APVFBI flag from outgoing President Henry Tiu to incoming President Charles Yu.

I have personally witnessed how these groups of fire volunteers, particularly those who belong to the Chinese-Filipino community, have steadily grown to become the trusted organizations that they are now.

The Association, I was told, was formally established in 1976 in the aftermath of several devastating fires that gutted a huge number of business establishments in the vicinities of Divisoria and Ongpin.

From then on, these fire volunteers have consistently been at the forefront of fire incidents.

Their precious, constant assistance to any and all fire incidents in the city has also paved the way for a deeper, better symbiotic relationship between the city government and the private sector, particularly the various fire volunteer groups such as the PVFBI.

These groups relentlessly assist the city and government firefighters in saving precious lives, limbs and properties during and every fire disaster.

What is even more admirable is that these individuals render such services without getting anything in return.

Not only do they not receive any monetary consideration, they also sacrifice even their own businesses and their very own lives, just to be able to save others.

With the limited resources of the local government of Manila in as much as it wants to fully modernize its fire-fighting and prevention capabilities and equipment, the volunteer firefighter groups are always there to readily complement our efforts.

Thus, I join our beloved Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan in her commendation of the volunteer firefighters not only in Manila but in the entire country as well, for providing much-needed help in the city government’s efforts to prevent, if not lessen, the harmful effects of fire on its residents.

Congratulations too, to President Yu and all those comprising the new set of officers, directors and members of the APVFBI.

And as the good mayor assures the fire volunteers’ groups of the city’s support in all their endeavors and activities, so does yours truly.

Indeed, the exemplary achievements of these volunteer firefighters in the field of self-sacrifice and volunteerism remain unparalleled and are worthy of emulation.

To our fire volunteers, we in the city of Manila are forever indebted. May your tribe continue to increase!
