IN pursuit of DOTr Secretary Art Tugade’s directive under “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Summer Vacation 2022,” the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is set to activate its operational measures, in anticipation of the passenger influx this coming Semana Santa and Summer Vacation 2022 from April 10 to April 18.
CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio said all 12 Area Managers handling the 42 CAAP-managed airports with commercial flights nationwide ensured the observance of maximum deployment of service and security personnel. Hence, a “no leave” policy will be implemented during the entire duration of Oplan Biyaheng Ayos.
According to Director General Captain Jim Sydiongco, CAAP airports are also continuously implementing the guidelines on the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 for passengers who will be on vacation and returning to their respective provinces.
Added security measures will be in place to ensure safe, reliable, and convenient operations at all commercial airports in the country from April 10 to 18.
Coordination has been made with airlines and local authorities regarding the efficient processing of passengers, especially at the check-in counters. Additional airline personnel will be deployed as needed to accommodate the increase in travelers.
Meanwhile, Apolonio said Malasakit Help Desks manned by duty officers will also be set-up to accommodate passenger concerns.
Commercial airports operated by CAAP welcomed a total of 29,258,258 passengers in 2019; 6,791,752 passengers in 2020, and 5,136,075 passengers in 2021.
For the Lenten season, 2,750,007 passengers travelled in 2019, 15,990 passengers travelled in 2020 and 231,479 passengers were welcomed in 2021. While a surge in the number of travelers may be seen last year compared to 2020, the passenger volume from 2021 still falls below pre-pandemic levels.
Based on historical data, an estimate of around 5-8% increase in the number of passengers is expected annually; and with the current easing of travel restrictions, CAAP is optimistically preparing for a possible surge in the demand for travel, Apolonio added. (TSJ)
