The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) effective at 9 a.m. of October 8, 2022 up to 9 a.m. of October 9, 2022 in connection with Mayon Volcano’s increasing unrest.
It was learned from CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio hat with Mayon Volcano now on Alert Level 2, flights have been prohibited to operate 10,000 feet from the surface and advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from the sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.
In an advisory, DOST-PHIVOLCS said that an ocular inspection of the summit during an aerial survey confirmed the presence of freshly -extruded lava at the base of the summit lava dome.
“In view thereof, the agency raised the Alert Level of Mayon Volcano from Alert Level 1 (abnormal) to Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest). According to DOST-PHIVOLCS, this means that there is current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to phreatic eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruptions,” Apolonio said.
