In a joint operation, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) – Port of Davao and the Philippine Navy-Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM) successfully intercepted illicit contraband in the vicinity waters of Davao Gulf.
Report reaching the office of BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio , this operation has led to the apprehension of 717 master cases containing 35,850 reams of assorted brands of cigarettes, with a combined estimated value of P27,587,500.00.
Authorities also seized one motorized banca during the operation.
Acting on credible intelligence and in collaboration with the Navy, Customs Davao initiated an extensive operation to curtail the illegal trade of cigarettes within the region.
The joint team moved into action to intercept and investigate the motorized banca, which was suspected of carrying illicit goods.
The inspection revealed a substantial quantity of contraband cigarettes, representing a grave violation of customs regulations and an evasion of substantial taxes.
District Collector Maritess T. Martin issued a warrant of seizure and detention on November 7, 2023, against the goods. Following an inventory, the seized cigarettes are now stored in a warehouse under the custody of the BOC, while the motorized banca is in the care of the Enforcement and Security Service – Davao.
To recall, the BOC-Port of Davao also seized P54,988,000 million worth of illicit cigarettes in the latter part of September this year.
Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio lauded the men and women of Port of Davao and Navy for their unwavering and steadfast commitment in protecting the country’s borders against illicit trade.
This effort by the Bureau of Customs, Collection District XII, under the leadership of District Collector Maritess T. Martin, is in line with 10 point priority programs of Commissioner Rubio thru active collaboration with partner enforcement.
