BI agents nab Korean wanted for burglary, theft in Pampanga

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) detained a South Korean fugitive wanted by authorities in Seoul for burglary and theft.

In a statement, BI Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the alien as 40-year-old Yang Heejun, who was arrested on Monday in Angeles City, Pampanga by operatives from the bureau’s fugitive search unit (FSU) in coordination with the Station 4 of the Angeles City Police Office.

Morente said Yang will be deported immediately as he was already ordered expelled by the BI board of commissioners late last year for being an undesirable and undocumented alien.

“He was arrested on the strength of a deportation warrant, and our legal division is now making arrangements for his trip to South Korea so he could stand trial for his crimes,” the BI chief said.

According to BI-FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy, Yang is subject of an Interpol red notice and an arrest warrant issued by the Seoul central district court where he was charged for Special Larceny, Destruction and Damage to property.

Sy said the Korean had been hiding in the Philippines for more than two years, having arrived prior to the pandemic in January 2020.

Information provided by the Interpol’s national central bureau (NCB) in Manila alleged that Yang forcibly entered a compatriot’s house in Seoul on Dec. 31, 2019 and robbed the victim of his valuables worth 18 million won, or nearly US$15 million.

The Korean is now held at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City while awaiting deportation.

He has been placed in the immigration blacklist and banned from re-entering the country. (TSJ)
