The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) monitored an issue with their Air Traffic Management Center (ATMC) software, necessitating the implementation of longer distance separation between flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
This issue has been resolved according to a subsequent advisory issued by the agency at 2 p.m. today.
In view of the incident, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) public affairs officer Connue Bungag assured that general manager Eric Ines is closely working with airline operators to manage the effects of the situation on their passengers and to jointly address expected congestion at the pre-departure gates and baggage claim areas.
“The MIAA undertakes to continuously support the airline operators in implementing any measure to help affected airport passengers,” said Ines.
Ines has also directed all Terminal Managers to provide additional seating and implement contingency measures in accordance with the Irregular Operations (IROPS) Manual including provision of Malasakit Kits.
As of 3 p.m. on Monday, the total number of flights affected is placed at 36 for domestic and 20 for international.
To address this situation, MIAA has opened the NAIA runways for 24 hours for use by the airlines for their recovery flights, Ines added.
