A Call for Accountability from Congress re Duterte’s ‘Legacy’

By: Baby Cuevas

The House of Representatives, under the strong leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez, is meticulously unraveling a disturbing web of corruption that exposes deep connections between illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), extrajudicial killings, drug trafficking and other serious crimes, all of which appear to have flourished under the previous administration of President Duterte.

The recent investigations spearheaded by the QuadComm, which includes the Dangerous Drugs Committee chaired by Ace Barbers, the Public Order and Safety Committee under Dan Fernandez, the Human Rights Committee led by Bienvenido Abante, and the Public Accounts Committee headed by Caraps Paduano, mark a pivotal juncture in the quest for justice and accountability in the wake of the Duterte administrationโ€™s controversial legacy.

The findings presented by the QuadComm compel us to confront the grim reality that the war on drugs, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, was part of a broader strategy to consolidate power and eliminate drug trade rivals.

The testimonies revealing how POGOs were utilized not only as vehicles for revenue but also as tools for illicit activities link directly back to the corrupt practices that permeated the past governance.

This is especially alarming given Duterteโ€™s earlier endorsements of POGOs as โ€œcleanโ€ operations, which now appear to have served only to facilitate corruption and become a breeder of crimes.

The vital role that the QuadComm plays in facilitating transparency and accountability is clear.

Lawmakers like Barbers, Fernandez, Abante, and Paduano are proving that political will can take the form of rigorous investigation and unyielding pursuit of the truth. Their collective efforts point to a growing acknowledgment that oversight must be restored within our government to prevent any future abuses of power.

As we witness this process unfold, it is crucial for the Filipino people to remain engaged and supportive of these inquiries. The revelations coming from these hearings are not just about unmasking past wrongs; they represent a broader commitment to establishing a more transparent and accountable governance framework. The horrors of the past must serve as lessons for the future, reminding us that the vigilance of our representatives is essential in safeguarding our democracy.

In sum, the work of these congressional committees is not just a necessary investigation into the previous administrationโ€™s transgressions.

It is an opportunity for renewal in our political landscape. As they continue to untangle the connections between Duterteโ€™s legacy and the crimes committed under his watch, they are tasked with laying the groundwork for a government that prioritizes the rule of law, human rights and the welfare of its citizens.

As citizens, we must rally behind their efforts and advocate for a future free from the shadows of evil and corruption that have plagued our nation under the Duterte administration.
